Country shoot
Many of the shots in this portfolio were taken during a country shoot on an estate in England. Six photographs from this set won the Documentary Series category in the British Wildlife Photography Awards in 2011. The ceremony for the awards was held at London's Alexandra Palace in October 2011 before the exhibition embarked on a nation-wide tour.
Opinions over country shoots are vastly polarised. Many advocates claim that the practice plays a valuable role in conservation. Historically, traditional country interests such as hunting and shooting have played a key role in saving the last fragments of Britain's woodland. Land managed for shoots continues to protect habitat important for the survival of many of the UK's declining species. However, while introduced pheasants like these are specifically reared to be shot, it is the control of wild birds of prey and indigenous so-called vermin species to protect this pastime that draws debate and objection from other quarters.
